Dems fight back as Wisconsin Republicans push to oust elections chief

Wisconsin was one of the states where former President Donald Trump and his allies attempted to overturn the 2020 election results. MAGA Republicans who falsely claimed that the election was stolen from Trump have been trying to oust nonpartisan elections chief Meagan Wolfe. So far, they haven't been successful, but they're still trying.

Politico's Zach Montellaro reports, "The (Wisconsin) State Senate is set to hold a hearing Tuesday, (August 29) on Meagan Wolfe, the administrator of the Wisconsin Elections Commission — the first step in what is likely an attempt to remove her from her position. Democrats say Republicans want to drive Wolfe out of office as retribution for decisions the Commission made in 2020."

Montellaro adds, "The brawl over Wolfe illustrates how, nearly three years after then-President Donald Trump's false claims of a stolen election in 2020, election misinformation still has a grip on arguably the most important swing state on the map — with Trump potentially on the ticket again."

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?

Ann S. Jacobs, a Democratic member of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, is pushing back against MAGA efforts to oust Wolfe.

Jacobs told Politico, "I think that it's largely out of a desire to find an explanation for Donald Trump's loss other than fewer people voted for him than Joe Biden. She is the chief elections officer, she offers a face to the conspiracy theories."

Democratic State Sen. Mark Spreitzer believes that if Republicans vote to oust Wolfe, Democrats may take the matter to court.

Spreitzer told Politico, "Even if you disagree with the Commission’s decisions, I don't think it's fair to take it out on Meagan…. If Republicans take it that far and take that vote…. we end up in court. And who sues who first, I have no idea."
