This 'verbal pit bull' could be Trump’s next AG — and must be 'taken seriously': Will Bunch

Former President Donald Trump has made no secret of his desire to take revenge against political opponents if he wins the 2024 GOP presidential nomination — which appears likely, according to polls — and defeats President Joe Biden in the general election.

In an opinion column published on November 19, the Philadelphia Inquirer's Will Bunch takes a look at the MAGA Republican who "War Room" host Steve Bannon, Donald Trump Jr. and others have been promoting as a possible U.S. attorney general in a second Trump Administration: attorney Mike Davis.

"Most folks, except for the most politically obsessed, have never heard of Davis, but it's time for people to learn," Bunch argues. "The mid-40s-ish Davis takes the abstract warnings that U.S. democracy is on the line in the 2024 election and brings them to life."

Davis, Bunch warns, is "now a verbal pit bull for Trump and his MAGA movement, making increasingly outrageous statements seemingly aimed at getting the attention of the boss and his inner circle."

Bunch notes some of the things Davis said during a September appearance on "The Benny Johnson Show," a far-right podcast.

Davis told Johnson, "We're gonna deport a lot of people, 10 million people and growing — anchor babies, their parents, their grandparents. We're gonna put kids in cages. It's gonna be glorious. We're gonna detain a lot of people in the D.C. gulag and Gitmo."

Bunch argues, "Look, we can all agree there's something about the podcast format and its jokey banter that encourages guests to make outrageous, over-the-top statements; just ask Charissa Thompson, right? The reality, though, of what Davis told Benny Johnson is that perhaps it should not be taken literally, but seriously. This ambitious right-wing lawyer may or may not be a true believer, but he knows how to audition for Trump. And it's working…. The time to talk about Mike Davis as attorney general — and the all-too real stakes of another Trump presidency — is not on January 21, 2025, but right now."
