'What are you afraid of?' Roberts hounded for refusing to testify about Supreme Court ethics scandals
09 July 2023
United States Representative Ro Khanna (D-California) appeared on Sunday's edition of MSNBC's Inside with Jen Psaki and mocked Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts' refusal to testify on Capitol Hill about the growing corruption scandals shadowing several of the Court's associate justices, of whom the most deeply entrenched in allegations of unethical behavior is Clarence Thomas.
"For members of Congress, anybody who works in the federal government, and this is just a different set of rules," host Psaki noted of the Court's lack of a code of conduct.
"So your fellow Progressive Caucus member, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez [D-New York}, has called for Chief Justice John Roberts to be subpoenaed by Congress. Would you support that?" Psaki asked Khanna.

"Well, I would support hearings. I think that the chief justice should testify," Khanna replied. "You know what? Look, I met the chief justice, I met him a couple years ago, and he said he cared about the legitimacy of the court, the legitimacy of democracy. Well, if he cares about the legitimacy of democracy, he should come testify. In past times, Supreme Court justices would meet with members of Congress and the Senate. It used to be common. Part of the whole problem here, Jen, is they're so cloistered, they're so outta touch, they don't have a sense of what life is like. So my plea to him would be, for the good of democracy, come testify. What are you afraid of?"
Psaki wondered, "And if he doesn't, would you support issuing a subpoena to get him to testify?"
In that case, Khanna said that he "would defer to what the Senate [Judiciary] Committee," which has already held inquiries into suspicions of conflicts of interest.
