'The very survival of our planet is on the ballot': Joe Biden fires up voters ahead of the midterms

President Joe Biden delivered a rousing speech at a Democratic National Committee rally in Rockville, Maryland on Thursday in which he reminded voters of what is at stake in the November midterm elections.

Biden and the Democrats are hoping to maintain or expand their slim majorities in the United States House of Representatives and Senate after a string of legislative victories and positive economic news. Republicans, meanwhile, have been pushed into defense mode amid ongoing scandals and legal battles swirling around their de factor party leader, former President Donald Trump.

"Folks, we're just 76 days away from the midterm election. Seventy-six days, and to state the obvious, there's a lot at stake. So I want to be crystal clear about what's on the ballot this year. Your right to choose is on the ballot this year. The Social Security you've paid for from the time you've had a job is on the ballot. The safety of your kids from gun violence is on the ballot," Biden said in his nearly hour-long address.

Fresh off the heels of the signing of his landmark Inflation Reduction Act, Biden emphasized that "this is not hyperbole: the very survival of our planet is on the ballot," adding that "your right to vote is on the ballot – even the democracy."

The president then asked the cheering crowd, "are you ready to fight for these things now? Well, then you need to do one thing. Vote. Vote."

Biden's remarks were met with chants of "vote, vote, vote," to which he replied, "you got it."
