When 2024 GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump chose Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate, MAGA Republicans were hoping that having the "Hillbilly Elegy" author on the ticket would improve Trump's chances of winning key Rust Belt states like Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.
But when Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz made a late July appearance on MSNBC, he slammed Vance as a faux-populist who doesn't understand the economic realities of working-class Rust Belt Americans.
Walz told MSNBC's Jen Psaki, "They scream socialism; we just build roads, and we build schools. And we build prosperity into this. Their whole plan is to go backward, to give tax cuts to the wealthy."

The Minnesota governor also called out "super-successful Donald Trump who inherited $400 million and then proceeded to fail at everything."
"(In) Middle America," Walz told Psaki, "you earn it. But you know? You're not on your own. Neighbors help neighbors."
Walz argued that "bullies" in the GOP "see people less fortunate as scapegoats" while "we see them as neighbors."
Walz told Psaki, a former Biden Administration press secretary, "I'm all for pulling yourself up by your bootstraps; we didn't have any boots. Social Security was the boots, and we pulled ourselves up…. And I think J.D. Vance gets none of that."

The Minnesota Democrat added, "It's the 'Aw, shucks. I'm from here' or whatever. My hillbilly cousins did not go to Yale, but I'll tell you what they did: They contributed to our community."
