'Weird' J.D. Vance may be 'one of the best things' Trump ever 'did for Dems'
29 July 2024
In 2021 and 2022, now-Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) angrily railed against "childless Democrats" and "childless cat ladies." Vance attacked several prominent Democrats for not having biological children, including Vice President Kamala Harris, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. And he even argued that the IRS should be used to "punish" Americans if they decide against having kids.
Now that Vance is Donald Trump's presidential running mate, those comments have come back to haunt him in a major way. Democrats have been hammering Vance relentlessly, stressing that Trump showed very bad judgement by making the "Hillbilly Elegy" author his running mate.
In a late July article for Axios, journalists Avery Lotz and Donica Phifer report that Democrats view Vance as a major liability for Trump in the 2024 election.

"It's been just one week since President Biden said goodbye to the campaign trail — and Vice President Kamala Harris' stepping into the party's spotlight sparked a tsunami of online, volunteer and donor support," the reporters explain. "Meanwhile, former President Trump's VP pick, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, keeps feeling the wrath of childless women across the nation for his resurfaced comment about 'childless cat ladies.'"
During a Sunday, July 29 appearance on CBS News' "Face the Nation," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) argued that picking Vance as his running mate was "may be one of the best things" Trump "ever did for Democrats."
Schumer told CBS News, "It's incredibly a bad choice. I think Donald Trump, I know him, and he's probably sitting and watching the TV — and every day, it comes out Vance has done something more extreme, more weird, more erratic. Vance seems to be more erratic and more extreme than President Trump. And I'll bet President Trump is sitting there scratching his head and wondering: Why did I pick this guy?"
That same day, Democratic strategist and former Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Donna Brazile was highly critical of Vance during an appearance on ABC News' "This Week."

Brazile told ABC News, "I never had one child, and yet, I think I can claim hundreds of them because I love them. I want to protect them. I want to help feed them. I want to give them a head start and a healthy start."
