'Uvalde would like a word': Texas Republican scolded for blaming Friday’s mass shooting on 'the migrants'

United States Congressman Chip Roy (R-Texas) on Monday blamed Friday's massacre in Cleveland, Texas on asylum-seekers from Central and South America.

Law enforcement agencies have reportedly hit a "dead end" searching for the thirty-eight-year-old suspect, who murdered five of his neighbors with an AR-15 after they asked him to stop firing off rounds in his yard. One of the victims was a nine-year-old boy.

And while the alleged attacker does have a history of deportation and flouting immigration laws, the idea that foreign nationals are responsible for a significant number of mass shootings is false.

According to Statista, "Between 1982 and April 2023, 74 out of the 142 mass shootings in the United States were carried out by white shooters. By comparison, the perpetrator was African American in 25 mass shootings, and Latino in 11. When calculated as percentages, this amounts to 52 percent, 17 percent, and seven percent respectively."

But these facts were nowhere to be found in Roy's statement to Fox News.

"But also the migrants. Let's remember this eight-year-old, nine-year-old boy. Some people are saying, 'oh, these are the, you know, illegal immigrants who were killed in this house.' I dunno, I think one might've been a citizen. That doesn't matter. This is an eight-year-old boy, a nine-year-old boy. Like, what are we doing in the most powerful history, uh, country in the history of the world? We're allowing this to occur. It's all largely preventable if we would just reclaim operational control of our border," Roy said, adding that "I'm proud that Republicans in the House Judiciary Committee put across legislation two weeks ago. They would take a giant step toward doing that. I hope we will move it off the House floor next week when we get back to coincide with Title 42 expiring. All relevant to what we're dealing with right now when Border Patrol will continue to be overwhelmed and now massively more overwhelmed with the expiration of Title 42."

Twitter users noted that Roy also missed the broader point — that easy access to weapons costs lives.

Paige ExGOP: "'Some people are saying,' please, it's the Governor of Texas saying… pitiful."

Tyson Kirksey: "Some consistency would be great from Mr. Roy. He's never as outraged when a legal resident takes a gun and commits an atrocity. Which of course is the vast majority of gun violence in TX."

Larry Thomas: "It's never the guns that are the problem."

The White Rose: "Illegal immigrants, drag queens, space lasers, purple m&m's, CRT... the list goes on. Will they ever catch a break?"
