Trump biographer blows up the secrets beneath his bizarre new hair

Amid growing speculation surrounding his hair, a one-time biographer for President Donald Trump exposed the secrets behind his well-known hairdo, and why it might be key to his political success.

Trump on Wednesday made an appearance at an event at the Red Rocks Casino in Las Vegas. While he delivered a speech littered with flubbed words and verbal struggles, most of the attention online was paid to his hair, which appeared noticeably different than in other recent photos and videos, looking much fuller, longer and less gray. This sparked a number of new conspiracy theories, including claims that he was now using hair extensions, or had gotten a new wig.

Michael Wolff is a veteran author and reporter, best known for his extensive coverage of Trump's political career. In the latest episode of his Daily Beast podcast, "Inside Trump's Head," he responded to questions from his co-host, Joanna Coles, about "what is that on [Trump's] head?"

"Well, I can tell you what's under Donald Trump's hair, and what is under Donald Trump's hair is nothing," Wolff said, further gesturing to his own bald head for comparison. That that that's actually what the top of Donald Trump's head is like."

Wolff referenced a passage from one of his earlier books about Trump's first term, Fire & Fury, wherein his daughter, Ivanka Trump, was "often making fun of her father" for his hair, and described "the elaborate architectural process of maintaining that dome over nothing."

"I think we can safely say the greatest comb over of all time," Wolff continued, noting further, "Each strand [of hair] having to come up, and as each strand comes up, the hair spray comes on, and in the end you have this: You've constructed a dome, a perfect dome."

Wolff noted that the extensive "cementing" of Trump's hair in place is the reason why it never seems blown out of place during his many press scrums near active helicopters. He also argued that the elaborate hair situation has become "a very central component of Donald Trump's identity and career." Calling it "one of my favorite passages, at this point, in all literature," Wolff brought up what Stormy Daniels claimed Trump told her when she asked about his hair.

"And he tells her, and he tells her in a very self-aware way," Wolff said. "It's really one of the few instances of self-awareness that [has] ever been ascribed to Donald Trump. And he said, you know, 'I was a handsome guy. You know, I had a, you know, I had a great, great head of hair. And then I started to lose it. So so I started to compensate for it. And that suddenly became what people were talking about when they talked about me. And I realized that this was a, you know, a brand differentiator that they remembered me because of my hair."

Wolff went on to say that the meticulous attention paid to his hair shows why Trump is one of the few politicians to have "fully and completely understood that politics is about people looking at you," arguing that his ham-fisted efforts have nevertheless helped distract people from his advanced age, in a way that former President Joe Biden notably struggled with.
