Labor reporter disputes Trump 'unity' push as GOP runs 'voter suppression campaign that dwarfs' 2020

With the 2024 Republican National Convention getting underway in Milwaukee, presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump — after surviving an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13 — has said that he will make an acceptance speech with a less aggressive tone than the "tough" one he originally had in mind.

But labor reporter John Wojcik, in an article published by People's World the first day of the convention, stresses that Republican calls for "unity" don't make Trump's "voter suppression" agenda any less dangerous.

"As the Republican National Convention got underway today with talk of 'unity' against the political violence for which it is actually responsible," Wojcik argues, "the party is already well on its way to running a massive voter suppression campaign that dwarfs what they did four years ago. If they succeed, it will be next to impossible to achieve victory for anti-MAGA candidates up and down the line, especially in key battleground states."

Wojcik continues, "In addition, Black and minority voters will see their ability to influence elections severely reduced and anti-labor candidates in general will see their prospects increased."

The labor reporter warns that if Trump loses in November, he will not accept the election results gracefully.

"Two main features of the drive they have already launched are plans to restrict voting in key states and elsewhere and to disrupt certification of the vote across the country," Wojcik explains. "Their plan is to contest the 2024 election across the country, and (they) are…. arguing that the election has already been rigged against Donald Trump."

Wojcik adds, "If Trump wins, of course, they will cease those challenges."
