'Some of his favorite falsities': Trump caught lying in exclusive Time magazine interview

With Donald Trump now three months into his chaotic second presidency, Time Magazine conducted an hour-long interview with him on Tuesday, April 22. Time covered a lot of ground with Trump, asking him about everything from foreign policy to taxes to the economy.

Tariffs and trade were discussed as well, and the Daily Beast's Sarah Ewall-Wice examines that part of the interview in an article published on April 25.

During the interview, Time asked Trump why there have been no trade deals so far. And Trump disagreed, claiming there have been "many deals."

Trump told Time, "You have to understand, I'm dealing with all the companies, very friendly countries. We're meeting with China. We're doing fine with everybody. But ultimately, I've made all the deals. I've made 200 deals."

But Ewall-Wice observes, "No trade deals have been announced to date since Trump's so-called 'Liberation Day' on April 2, despite the president caving and halting some of the announced tariffs for 90 days amid market turmoil…. However, he refused to share who he has made the deals with, declaring 'the deal is a deal that I choose' before rambling about setting tariffs. The president suggested that the deals would be announced over the next three to four weeks and would be finished."

Ewall-Wice adds, "The president also claimed the U.S is losing $2 trillion on trade a year, but the trade deficit with the rest of the world was $917 billion last year, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis."

The Daily Beast reporter notes that Trump "also repeated some of his favorite falsities" during the Time interview.

"When it came to inflation," Ewall-Rice observes, "the president repeated his claim that the price of groceries has gone down. However, the price of groceries was up 2.4 percent in March from a year ago."
