White House staff are dreading the next two years under Donald Trump, having just seen the absolutely disastrous midterm results and are already thinking about leaving.
Current and former officials have told MS NOW that the mood in the White House is terrible following the GOP’s complete electoral wipeout on Tuesday as Democrats rode a blue tsunami to take control of both houses of Congress.
Trump’s expensive renovations, such as the Reflecting Pool and the ballroom projects, have particularly frustrated and at times confused staff throughout the White House, per the report.
“The President’s attention is all over the place,” said one former White House official who is still in touch with the administration, adding: “How many people are preparing briefs on what marble to pick for X project?”
The same official said morale is low and that “the glitz and glam of the White House is wearing off.”
“There is no holding back on the desire to leave now,” the official said.
“Some are making calls to try and jump ship.” The official added, are being advised to get legal advice as a 'precaution.” One former Trump administration official has summed up the atmosphere in one word: “pain.”
“Everybody’s gonna start infighting,” the official said, based on what they know of the internal state of affairs.
After a spate of departures, a number of people close to Trump’s operation are now wondering whether it’s worth staying in the administration for the final two years. “It’s going to be hell,” said one person close to the operation. “No one is going to work there — you have to be independently wealthy,” the person added, referring to White House staff pay compared with the private sector.
That person highlighted how hard it is to get the best people to walk away from good jobs to take on a precarious, short-term role in the administration. “A lot of people think he’s not going to be able to do anything. He’s a lame duck,” said one of the former officials. That official did, however, believe the Democratic takeover of Congress had less to do with allies not wanting to join: “The President is using executive authority on most of these things, particularly on foreign policy and all the things he’s doing that have nothing to do with Congress.”
Despite all the backlash, the President has simply reverted to his various renovation projects. On the eve of Tuesday’s election, he held an event where he ranted and gave more pointless updates on the disastrous renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The day after the midterm wipeout, he was at the site of his $600m White House ballroom project, giving reporters a construction update and didn’t so much as mention the GOP’s losses.
Trump has put the blame on Fox News and the candidates themselves following the massive Democratic wave. He specifically targeted Texas GOP Governor Greg Abbott, whom he branded a RINO, and absolved himself of any blame, stating that Republicans would have won “IN A LANDSLIDE” if he’d been on the ballot.
