'Nativist creep' Trump slammed as 'antisemite' after rant attacking 'Jewish Pennsylvania governor'
22 August 2024
Although Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris ultimately chose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, she seriously considered Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. And Shapiro, after Harris made her decision, passionately endorsed the Harris-Walz ticket — first at a major rally in Philadelphia, later on the third night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
Shapiro attacked GOP nominee Trump with a vengeance during those speeches, describing the former president as dangerously authoritarian and fundamentally anti-democracy. And Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform, responded to Shapiro's 2024 DNC speech by emphasizing the fact that the Pennsylvania governor is Jewish.
Trump posted, "The highly overrated Jewish Governor of the Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, made a really bad and poorly delivered speech talking about freedom and talking about fighting for Comrade Kamala Harris for President, yet she hates Israel…. Israel is in BIG trouble."

Trump's inflammatory comments are drawing a lot of responses on X, formerly Twitter — many of them quite negative.
CNN's Edward-Isaac Dovere tweeted, "Trump chooses to refer to Josh Shapiro specifically as Jewish, in a way he never does for the many Christian politicians he posts about."
The conservative National Review's Philip Klein posted, "If Trump's intention was to alienate every possible gettable Jewish voter who has been disillusioned by Dems but still unsure if they could vote for him, this was an A+ post."
While Klein attacked Trump from the right, Dissent Magazine's Richard Yeselson slammed him from the left.
Yeselson posted, "I mean…. he has many flaws, obviously, but among them is that he's an anti-Semite. It can get lost in his other bigotries — he's a racist, a nativist, a misogynist creep. But he is for sure an anti-Semite."
During his DNC speech, Harris' husband Doug Emhoff — who describes himself as "proudly Jewish" — had a lot to say about his interfaith marriage (Harris is a Baptist). And writer/filmmaker Melissa J. Peltier, in response to Trump's post, wrote, "Except that her beloved husband & step kids are all Jewish.
Attorney Sam Johnston tweeted, "Well if you think Israel is in trouble then you must be expecting to lose, I guess."
