'Reasons for Trump to receive a sentence of at least what' his co-conspirator got: legal expert

After a Manhattan jury found former President Donald Trump guilty last week on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business documents in efforts to suppress hush money payments made to benefit his 2016 campaign, the ex-president claimed to be "an innocent man."

On Tuesday, former FBI counsel and legal analyst Andrew Weissmann shared his thoughts on the consequences the MAGA hopeful's should face during his sentencing next month.

Per The Associated Press, "Judge Juan M. Merchan set sentencing for July 11, just days before Republicans are formally set to nominate Trump for president."

Weissmann pointed to former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen's 2018 sentencing as a guide for what he thinks would be a fair sentence for the former president.

Cohen, who served as one of the prosecution's witnesses during the trial, "pleaded guilty to eight criminal counts in August 2018, including charges of causing an unlawful campaign contribution, stemming from a $130,000 hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels to hide an alleged affair with Trump before the 2016 presidential election," according to Forbes.

"The Trump upcoming criminal sentencing: Michael Cohen received a 36-month sentence on the two charges that are the federal equivalent of the crimes for which Trump was found guilty," Weissmann wrote via X (formerly Twitter).

"But Cohen unlike Trump cooperated in part," the ex-FBI attorney continued, "pled guilty, and was not the leader of the scheme. All reasons for Trump to receive a sentence of at least what Cohen got."
