George Conway just used Trump’s 'deep state' weapon against him

George Conway, a lawyer who was married to President Donald Trump’s former counsel Kellyanne Conway, mocked the Republican leader on Tuesday by pointing out that his Reflecting Pool renovations had been ruined by a human — but it was his own so-called “deep state.”

“THE DEEP STATE IS BACK,” Conway posted, retweeting a post by NBC News reporter Ryan J. Reilly. Reilly reported that, despite Trump falsely claiming the Reflecting Pool renovations were caused by malicious sabotage and not his incompetence, a recent report revealed that a government official was in fact responsible for at least some of the damage.

“Someone did, in fact, take a knife to the Reflecting Pool!” Reilly posted. “Only it was a National Park Service engineer, trying to stop the peeling from worsening.” He then quoted how “the government’s own engineer determined that it was better to cut off the peeling sections than to let them flap around."

This is not Conway’s first swipe at the president. In fact, he has been one of Trump’s most outspoken critics since the start of his first term, even when his wife was working for the president.

“Truly absurd headline,” Conway wrote after The New York Times claimed Trump was “emotional” following the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). “And most importantly, grossly factually inaccurate. Beyond any reasonable doubt, Trump is a sociopath; he does not grieve, nor is he capable of grief. Even if journalists are too timid to report that truth, they should not report the contrary as truth.”

Conway, who co-founded the anti-Trump Republican group The Lincoln Project, also posted in July to criticize Trump’s involvement in prediction markets.

"It's really not that much different, except there's no productive aspect to it," Conway argued. He cited a report that Trump's social media site, Truth Social, will offer advanced access to information that people can use to bet on prediction markets. Conway characterized this as “basically a form of insider trading. You're paying for information.”

Conway also blasted Trump in July for getting America into a war with Iran without a long-term strategy for keeping that hostile country from harming this nation economically.

“The problem, ultimately,” Conway wrote, “is that restoration of free passage in the Hormuz Strait would require a massive combined-arms offensive that would be extremely costly in blood and treasure, that would necessitate involvement of Western allies who no longer trust us and won't fight with us, and for which there would be little, if any, domestic political support.”
