In the wake of President Donald Trump’s rallies on Wednesday, a widely cited psychologist and body language expert warned of a “shocking new symptom” of the commander-in-chief’s increasingly apparent “neurological decline.” According to Dr. John Garrison, Trump displayed a “wide variety of neurological symptoms” suggesting a severe “dysfunction,” and it’s only going to get worse.
“I've been saying for a while now the signs and symptoms of the neurological dysfunction are going to become more obvious,” says Garrison, asserting, “It is more obvious now.” Here he plays a clip in which Trump makes an abrupt "eeerp" noise in the middle of speaking. According to Garrison, “There's several possibilities of what this could be. This could be something like I talked about a couple of months ago, like a focal aware seizure or something similar. But one thing we know for sure is that we're seeing motor dysfunction. We're also seeing vocal dysfunction.” Whatever the cause, warns Garrison, it is “a startling and absolutely shocking new symptom.”
Here Garrison notes an arm spasm, saying it could be a precursor to the abrupt noise. “This dysfunction happened very quickly,” says Garrison, “but then it seemed to be for about a second or two afterwards, he was unable to speak… I've been analyzing him for months now, and I've never seen this constellation of symptoms for him. Never where he vocalizes, sticks his tongue out, and engages the entire face. There's been a wide variety of symptoms, but this constellation is new.” After that, “he does seem to be struggling to gather his thoughts. You're gonna see a lot of hesitancy here as he tries to get his rhythm back.” In Garrison’s estimation, “I think he may be struggling to produce language the way he wants to. You hear that he had to repeat himself again. So as he got through the sequence following the event, you can hear there was a lot of hesitancy. There was a lot of repetition. But I think in general he's been able to hide a lot of these behaviors… but if you watch it all in sequence, it's impossible to deny that something very significant happened.”
From there, Trump begins talking about the renaming of a lake – presumably Lake Ontario, which he asserts is now “Lake America” – but he appears to be unable to recall the name. “I actually can't understand what on Earth he's trying to say,” notes Garrison, “because I don't think full words came out and then you see an odd facial expression. And afterward we're seeing disinhibition. He seems excited, almost manic.” Then, as the president begins rambling about how powerful he is, Garrison says, “He's feeling grandiose even by Trump standards; talking about power in that direct way is a little bit unusual. He seems to be engaging in behaviors that are even more extreme and uninhibited than usual now. He frequently does this impression of a woman lifting weights, but I want you to watch the way he does it this time: it's even more extreme than he typically does, and to me this says there is something going on tonight…There's a quality about this one that appears almost manic…His behavior is even more out of control than it normally is. It seems that he's really struggling to inhibit anything he says or does.” From there, Trump once again struggles with “word-finding issues when he’s unable to remember the name of the Nobel Peace Prize. “So he settled on a different prize altogether,” suddenly calling it the Pulitzer Prize.
“I've been saying for a long time that we are going to see an escalation in these behaviors,” concludes Garrison. “They are going to progress. They're going to get worse, and that's exactly what we're seeing. When you see something like this, it can be surprising, startling, unsettling because it's so odd and it's so unexpected. That being said, you should expect that we are going to see more behavior like this, and it is going to change, and it is going to be, at times, more extreme.”
