Republicans 'blindsided' and fuming at Trump's huge military purge

Republicans were fuming as they spoke to The Hill on Monday, saying they were "blindsided" by the Trump administration's huge military purge and demanding greater transparency from the Pentagon.

At his "State of the Force" address this week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that the military would be firing around 20 percent of its generals and admirals. While Hegseth claimed that a purge of "fat generals" and "weak" officers was needed, critics have accused him of going after officers for ideological disagreements. Over half of his dismissals up to this point have also been either women or people of color.

In its Monday report, The Hill found that "Key Republican senators" were fuming at the Trump administration and the Pentagon, "voicing concerns about the lack of consultation with Congress and the possibility that qualified senior officers were sacked for political or ideological reasons." Concerns are also being raised about Hegseth potentially damaging military readiness for future conflicts by forcing out top officers on political grounds.

"I wouldn’t have made that a priority if I had been asked,” Senate Armed Services Committee Chair Roger Wicker, a Mississippi Republican, told the outlet, adding that he only found out about the 20 percent purge shortly before it was announced last week. “I didn’t get a long lead."

"Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Susan Collins(R-Maine), who is handling the Pentagon’s request for an emergency supplemental spending package as well as the annual defense spending bill, said the sudden and large reduction of generals and admirals raises questions and concerns," The Hill explained further. "Collins said she didn’t get advanced notice of the steep reduction in military leadership ranks. She noted she told Hegseth at a hearing earlier this year that his ouster of senior military officials was 'deeply troubling' and risked 'depriving us' of the 'talent, dedication and patriotism' of women and people of color who were disproportionately pushed out."

"Our system for promoting officers has always been an example of one of the greatest meritocracies that we have," Collins said after Hegseth's address on Wednesday. “I think that we should adhere to a system that has served us well. There may be a need to reduce the overall number of flag officers at the Pentagon, but this approach seems to be targeted on ideology. It also disturbs me that there’s a disproportionate number of Blacks and females who are not being promoted."

Sen. Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican and vocal critic of Trump's cabinet, ripped Hegseth and said that he "failed to respect Congress."

"Too much time has passed, and he’s failed to respect Congress," Tillis said. "He’s never really given us fulsome briefings."

He added: "When you’re the head of the Department of Defense or any agency, you at least engage your committees. When you hear Sen. Wicker and other people express frustration — we’re his stakeholders. We control his purse strings, and he’s almost treating us like we’re some line workers down in the manufacturing facility that he doesn’t want to spend time with. It’s a huge problem, and I think he’s the face of the problem."
