U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to the media before boarding Marine One upon departure for New York, in Washington, D.C., U.S., September 11, 2025.
As Trump drags his Republican Party into the midterm elections, analysts and strategists can’t seem to stop talking about his unifying messaged — for Democrats.
“The sources I'm talking to on both sides of the aisle are all saying this is President Trump's fault,” said CNN anchor Kasie Hunt, referring to 62 percent of voters disapproving of Trump. “Should Republicans really suffer significant losses? And one person pointed to there's the Senate race in Iowa, which in many ways is a pretty good example of a generic race between a Republican and a Democrat, and Ashley Hinson, who's run a strong campaign, started out saying she was going to be Donald Trump's biggest ally in the Senate.”
“That was a year ago. And now she's running ads about bipartisanship, distancing herself from the president on Iran. It's just one example, but it really underscores what we're seeing in this data that's coming out,” said Hunt.
“Well, Donald Trump got his wish,” opined CNN panelist and Democratic pundit Van Jones. “People are voting as if he's on the ballot. And people who are voting thinks he's terrible. Look, when you say you have the majority of Americans, 61 percent of Americans are saying the president of the United States is putting his personal interests above the country's interests, that all this talk about corruption, all this talk about him grifting and grabbing and enriching himself while people can't fill up their trucks more than a quarter tank while hospitals are closing.”
“People thought he was going to be some kind of modern-day dictator. He turned into a modern-day Liberace who's just doing all kind of weird stuff, and people are suffering,” said Jones. “And so that is really the gap that you're seeing. But I think the number he puts his personal interest above the country's interests. And 61 percent of people who voted today feel that way. That is a nightmare for the Republicans.”
Republican pundit Scott Jennings’ own assessment was not too far off, though he did work to phrase the Trump’s consequences as “a mixed bag” for Republicans.
“The economic number is interesting,” said Jennings. “Fifty-six percent say they are better off or the same as they were two years ago. Only 44 percent say worse off. You know, a lot of the Democratic campaigns have depicted America as some economic hellscape. I'm not sure that's borne out here.”
But Jennings added that “no doubt 75 percent of Americans are PO'd. And that's rough for the incumbent party."
