President Donald Trump's seemingly deteriorating mental health is a constant topic of debate and discussion, but according to his one-time biographer, he has a hidden mental struggle that has left him "a wreck."
Michael Wolff is a longtime author and reporter who has had extensive access to Trump and his allies over the years, famously writing a series of tell-all biographies about the chaos of his first term as president. In the latest episode of his Daily Beast podcast, "Inside Trump's Head," he revealed that Trump is struggling with "loneliness and paranoia," which are exacerbating the rough current state of his presidency.
“He is paranoid, is angry... things are not going well for him,” Wolff said. “And what effect does that have on the overweight man who doesn’t exercise?”
He further noted that Trump's second term has become a "downer" for him, owing largely to the fact that he is barred from seeking a third term in the White House, and therefore has nothing to build towards. This also might go towards explaining his obsession with his own legacy of late, manifesting in his desire to put his name on famed institutions and build new monuments to himself.
“You have nothing to work toward," Wolff said. "You know, you’re not running again, you see your end, and that must be frightening. And also, everyone is taking things from you.”
He continued: “The loneliness must set in probably exactly at the point Trump is now. He’s facing the midterms. They’re going to be a catastrophe for Trump... [He] clearly recognizes this is a catastrophe, and it’s going to be a catastrophe that is around his neck."
The Daily Beast noted that "signs of Trump’s deepening frustration" are becoming clearer and clearer, as he erupts into "bitter meltdowns at reporters, political foes, and members of his own party."
"After hawkish Republicans in Congress raised concerns about the president’s negotiations with Iran over the weekend, the president lashed out at 'losers' who criticize him, while comparing his legacy with that of President Barack Obama," the outlet detailed. "Wolff argued that the president’s anger over his mounting setbacks, combined with his notoriously unhealthy lifestyle, could take a devastating toll on his health."
"The man is a mess, the man is a wreck,” Wolff added. “And I don’t think it’s getting any easier for him in this job. The job itself, you know, the presidency is a, oh, man, it’s a high-pressure job... And he looks terrible. I mean... day by day you can... see this. He looks exhausted.”
