Why Trump’s massive legal bills could 'hamstring his efforts against Biden'

Former President Donald Trump's massive legal bills stem from not only the four criminal indictments he is facing, but also, from a variety of civil lawsuits — some of which have also resulted in millions of dollars in sanctions.

On April 22, Forbes estimated that Trump's net worth had increased to $4.7 billion thanks in part to his shares in his publicly traded company Trump Media & Technology Group. But even so, he is facing a great deal of financial strain.

According to USA Today, a new campaign finance report details the toll that Trump's legal expenses are taking on his 2024 presidential campaign and his leadership PAC Save America.

USA Today reporters Zac Anderson Erin Mansfield, in an article published on April 23, explain, "A report that Save America filed with the Federal Election Commission this weekend shows the committee spent another $3.7 million in March on payments to more than a dozen law firms, including two firms associated with Trump's top lawyers in the hush money case."

One of the attorneys defending Trump in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr.'s hush money/falsifying business records trial is Todd Blanche.

According to Anderson and Mansfield, Blanche's firm Blanche Law received $730,000 in March. And $415,000 went to attorney Susan Necheles' firm, Necheles Law LLP."

"While public records can't say what, specifically, law firms are being paid to do, records show Save America has paid more than 70 different lawyers and law firms," the USA Today journalists report. "Many of the firms are also listed in public court paperwork representing Trump in his civil and criminal cases. The $76 million that Save America has spent on legal fees, according to a USA Today analysis, is an extraordinary sum that could hamstring Trump's efforts against (President Joe) Biden."

Michael Kang, a law professor at Northwestern University in Evanson, Illinois (a Chicago suburb), notes that Trump's legal bills will continue to soar in the months ahead.

Kang told USA Today, "He appears to be spending an incredible amount of campaign finance money on legal expenses that range well beyond what would be considered campaign-related. I doubt, however, that we'll get to the bottom of all this until much later on."
