'Dubious claims of voter fraud': Trump lawyers are reportedly urging him to cancel press conference
17 August 2023
When Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis announced that a grand jury had indicted Donald Trump and 18 of his allies on criminal charges in connection with their efforts to overturn the United States' 2020 presidential election results, Trump responded by promising a press conference. But according to ABC News, some of his allies — including attorneys defending him — are urging Trump to cancel the event, which they believe could hurt him legally.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump promised to present a "Large, Complex, Detailed but Irrefutable REPORT on the Presidential Election Fraud which took place in Georgia." And Gov. Brian Kemp, a conservative Republican, once again pushed back against Trump's voter fraud claims.
"The 2020 election in Georgia was not stolen," Kemp tweeted. "For nearly three years now, anyone with evidence of fraud has failed to come forward — under oath — and prove anything in a court of law."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?
Former Vice President Mike Pence, who is competing with frontrunner Trump in the 2024 presidential election primary, agreed with Kemp. At an event in Indianapolis, Pence reiterated, "The Georgia election was not stolen."
Katherine Faulders and Jonathan Karl of ABC News report that according to "multiple sources," the press conference is "now very much in doubt."
"Sources tell ABC News that Trump's legal advisers have told him that holding such a press conference with dubious claims of voter fraud will only complicate his legal problems, and some of his attorneys have advised him to cancel it," according to Faulders and Karl.
