'Conflicting schedule': Trump lawyers retaliate against Jack Smith by pushing docs trial delay

In a Wednesday, October 11 court filing, ex-President Donald Trump lawyers retaliated against United States Department of Justice special counsel Jack Smith's team by seeking a November 2024 date for the MAGA hopeful's classified documents trial, opposed to the scheduled May 2024 date, The Messenger reports.

Trump's attorneys requested the delay in a motion last week, seeking to shift the trial's start date until 'at least mid-November 2024.'

Prosecutors in Smith's Office responded in a court filing on Monday, writing that 'the defendants provide no credible justification to postpone a trial that is still seven months away.'

The news outlet reports, "In their filing Wednesday replying to the response from Smith's team, Trump's lawyers alleged that prosecutors had made a "strategic decision to pursue a conflicting schedule" between the Florida and Washington, D.C. cases."

The ex-president's attorneys argue, according to the report, that "Smith's team has not allowed defense lawyers to view key evidence 'that is central to the pending charges,' and argued that Trump's trial on federal election-obstruction in Washington, D.C. conflicts with the trial of the Florida case."
