'Opting out': Major retailer refuses to sponsor GOP convention to nominate Trump

The retail giant Kohl's will not sponsor any Republican National Convention events in its home town of Milwaukee where former President Donald Trump, a convicted felon, is expected to win his party's nomination, according to a new report.

CNBC reporter Brian Schwartz broke the news Thursday that the major retailer was "opting out of sponsoring Donald Trump's Republican National Convention" later this summer, he wrote on X.

"They become a major company in the state to announce they won't sponsor the event," Schwartz added.

A CNBC report includes confirmation from a Kohl's spokeswoman.

“Kohl’s is not a political organization nor donor and is not sponsoring nor engaging in any specific RNC events,” she reportedly said.

About 50,000 people are expected to rally in Milwaukee from July 15 - 18, when Trump is expected to be crowned the leading candidate, according to the report.

The convention also takes place days after Trump is slated to face sentencing in Manhattan criminal court on charges he falsified business records to conceal hush money payments made ahead of the 2016 election.

Twelve jurors found Trump guilty on all 34 counts after hearing from former fixer Michael Cohen and adult film star Stormy Daniels, both of whom testified Trump wanted to bury salacious stories he feared would torpedo his campaign.

His sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 11.

Among those to celebrate Kohl's decision was vocal Trump critic George Conway, a longtime conservative.

"Good for Kohl’s," he wrote on X. "No self-respecting business should support the cultish and mendacious idolation of a depraved sociopath and convicted felon."
