How Trump’s 'irritating' lawyers have 'littered the court with legal landmines'

Donald Trump is not only facing four criminal indictments — the 2024 GOP presidential frontrunner is also dealing with a variety of civil lawsuits, one of which is New York State Attorney General Letitia James' fraud case.

James alleges that the Trump Organization deceived banks by seriously exaggerating the value of its real estate assets. Justice Arthur F. Engoron, assigned to the case, has agreed with James. Now that the trial is underway, it's a question of what type of sanctions Trump's company will face.

In an article published on October 16, the Daily Beast's Jose Pagliery stresses that Trump's legal strategy during the trial has been a combination of chaos and delay.

"For nine straight days," Pagliery observes, "Trump's defense lawyers have littered the court with legal landmines, objecting to nearly every bit of evidence submitted by New York Attorney General Letitia James and warning New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur F. Engoron that each decision he makes will be closely scrutinized by appellate judges — and likely reversed. At one point, Engoron had to remind Trump's legal team, 'Trials are…. not an opportunity to relitigate what I've already decided…. That's why we have appeals."

Pagliery notes that the "stakes are high" for Trump in James' case, as he "is at real risk of losing his real estate empire." Trump's lawyers, according to Pagliery, have "adopted a comically and deliberately irritating tactic by "asking long-winded questions about each line in each document — and repeating each question for every year from 2011 and beyond."

The reporter notes, "The tension reached a boiling point on only the trial's third day, when the judge repeatedly advised that defense lawyers speed things along — only to have defense lawyer Jesus Suarez agree, then ignore him anyway."
