'A tight case': Ex-White House lawyer details Jack Smith’s 'overwhelming evidence' against Trump
28 July 2023
On Thursday, July 27, special counsel Jack Smith's Mar-a-Lago documents case against former President Donald Trump was expanded when new charges were added and another co-defendant, Mar-a-Lago employee Carlos De Oliveira, was indicted. Trump was already facing a 37-count federal criminal indictment, but according to legal experts, the case against the former president has become even more severe.
Ty Cobb, a former Trump White House lawyer, isn't mincing words about the case's expansion — which he described as "overwhelming" during a CNN appearance on July 27.
Cobb told CNN's Erin Burnett, "I think this original indictment was engineered to last a thousand years, and now this superseding indictment will last an antiquity. This is such a tight case, the evidence is so overwhelming."

Cobb represented Trump during special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation. And he considers Smith's Mar-a-Lago documents case much more damning — especially after the charges were added on July 27.
Cobb told Burnett, "It's very difficult to imagine how Trump said that his lawyers met with Jack Smith today to explain to him that he hadn't done anything wrong (Trump's claim in the election subversion case), on the same day that Jack Smith produces this overwhelming evidence of additional wrongdoing."
The attorney added that he was certain Trump's lawyers had warned him, during the Mar-a-Lago documents investigation, "not to destroy, move (documents) or obstruct this grand jury subpoena in any way." But Smith, with the additional charges, alleges that Trump went ahead and did it anyway, according to Cobb.
The former Trump White House lawyer told Burnett, "So, this is Trump going not just behind the back of the prosecutors, this is Trump going behind the back of his own lawyers and dealing with two people (co-defendants Walt Nauta and De Oliveira) who are extremely loyal."
