Trump insiders forced to do 'clean up' after his latest 'rambling incoherent' speech

On Friday morning members of a CNN panel piled on Donald Trump over his speech earlier in the week where he praised terrorist group Hezbollah as "very smart" and trashed Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu while his country was reeling from an attack from Hamas.

According to CNN's John Avlon, the former president did serious damage to his re-election prospects with the panel noting that his allies are busy doing damage control in the wake of his "incoherent" comments on the growing war in the Middle East.

After host Poppy Harlow shared clips of Republicans attacking Trump over his speech, Avlon jumped in and expressed disgust with the former president's remarks.

"He cannot help but make it all about himself," he began before adding, "This is another -- these rambling incoherent, unhinged statements from the former president, attacking one of our closest allies at a time of maximum pain, blaming the victim in effect while praising a terrorist organization who is targeting civilians in Israel."

"It's the kind of thing that in a rational political world would be a disqualifier, it's self-evidently that; you heard the clips of people running for the Republican nomination finally standing up to Trump and condemning his comments," he added. "There's absolutely no moral excuse except that he sees everything through the prism of himself, even a massive terror attack in Israel."

"Another way to put that is the argument for Trump is falling apart right in front of him and we're seeing him lash out for that reason," CNN contributor Errol Lewis contributed. "He's supposed to be a successful businessman -- we're seeing in court he's not that successful. He's supposed to be, on the world stage, doing all kinds of things, you know, move the embassy to Jerusalem and so forth. Netanyahu is like, 'You know what? We're with Biden right now.' That part of his argument is falling apart."

"We will continue to see him lash out as he feels like his chances for recapturing the White House are crumbling in front of him," he added.

That led CNN host Phil Mattingly to point out, "It was fascinating to watch his team actually have a cleanup effort last night: several press releases. They don't usually do that in a formalized manner."

I'm sure the former president will undercut that shortly," he then quipped.
