'Straight up housing discrimination': How Trump 'denied Black people the American dream'

During the final night of the Democratic National Convention Thursday, civil rights leader and former New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial hit Donald Trump over his legacy of housing discrimination in the state of New York.

"In the 1970s, Donald Trump was sued for refusing to rent his apartments to African Americans," Morial told thousands of DNC attendees.

The ex-mayor emphasized that Trump's "employees were told, 'Put those applications in a drawer, and leave them there.' It was straight up housing discrimination. It was racism, and civil rights advocacy put an end to it."

Morial then compared Trump's past housing policies as a real estate mogul to Harris' plan to ensure every American enjoys affordable housing.

"Kamala Harris has a plan to build more housing, keep rent prices fair, and help more people own homes," he said.

The longtime civil rights advocate then said: "Donald Trump, you denied Black people the American dream, and Kamala Harris is creating a future where every family — yes, every family — has a place to call home."

During a debate between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in 2016, Clinton gave voters the same reminder, saying:

Donald started his career, back in 1973, being sued by the Justice Department for racial discrimination — because he would not rent apartments in one of his developments to African-Americans, and he made sure that the people who worked for him understood that was the policy.

NPR reported, "The lawsuit was based on evidence gathered by testers for the New York City Human Rights Division, which alleged that black people who went to Trump buildings were told there were no apartments available, while white people were offered units."
