Legal analyst names conservative judges speaking out against Trump’s 'hostages' rhetoric

During an Ohio rally for MAGA hopeful Donald Trump Saturday, the former president attacked the prosecutors — once again — who have the ongoing cases against him.

Trump lambasted New York Attorney General Letitia James over his nearly $400 million civil fraud case, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg over Trump's alleged falsifying of business records to cover up hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels, and Fulton Country District Attorney Fani Willis over the ex-president's attempt to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia.

The New York Times reports, "The former president opened his speech by praising the people serving sentences in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. Mr. Trump, who faces criminal charges tied to his efforts to overturn his election loss, called them 'hostages' and 'unbelievable patriots,' commended their spirit and vowed to help them if elected in November. He also repeated his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen, which have been discredited by a mountain of evidence."

During Sunday's episode of MSNBC's The Weekend, former US Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security Mary McCord, who is also an MSNBC legal and national security contributor, pointed out the fact even conservative judges have condemned Trump's rhetoric.

The former president also threatened that there will be a "bloodbath" if he loses the election in November.

"There are threats — there might be threats not just over the phone or on social media, but sometimes there's physical threats, people who do travel, that do try to harm the prosecutors, harm prosecutors in their offices, and this is dangerous," McCord emphasized. "I mean, we have had multiple prosecutions now of people making threats against prosecutors and judges and others."

The former US attorney continued, "The other point want to make, going back to Trump's comments of so-called hostages being convicted and many serving time for their role in the attack on the capitol on January 6th — it's not just prosecutors who are disgusted, it's not just others who are disgusted. Judges — judges in the District of Columbia who have been overseeing the cases now, ever since they started to be brought in 2021 — Republican-appointed judges, Trump-appointed judges, Democrat-appointed judges — they have been united in how serious these crimes have been and how serious they must be taken, and they have also had numerous of them recently speaking out with alarm about this rhetoric about political prisoners and hostages."

She noted, "Judge Royce Lamberth, a Reagan appointee; Judge Thomas Hogan, a Reagan-appointee — speaking out, saying this narrative, this false narrative about hostages, this is infecting — it's wrong, number one, and it's just false. And it's just getting embedded in our history in a way that's very damaging to democracy."
