'The American people deserve better': Republicans call out Trump’s 'embarrassing' anti-Harris remarks
01 August 2024
Former President Donald Trump set off yet another racial controversy when he claimed, during a discussion at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, July 31, that presumptive 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has conveniently "turned Black."
Trump told attendees, "Is she Indian or is she Black?.... She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn't know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black. And now, she wants to be known as Black. So I don't know, is she Indian or is she Black? I respect either one, but she obviously doesn't."
In fact, Harris has mentioned her heritage many times over the years, noting that her father was a Black Jamaican and her mother was from Indian.

Liberals and progressives have been quick to call Trump out in response to those comments, but he is also drawing some criticism from fellow Republicans.
According to Axios reporters Andrew Solender, Stef W. Kight and Juliegrace Brufke, "The tense interview is being met with GOP reactions ranging from qualified concern to outright shock, with some Republicans questioning Trump's ability to adapt to the new Democratic ticket."
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who isn't supporting Trump's presidential campaign, wasn't shy about criticizing Trump.
The Alaska Republican told Axios, "Maybe they don't know how to handle the campaign, and so you default to issues that just should simply not be an issue."

On X, formerly Twitter, former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (the GOP's U.S. Senate nominee in his state), tweeted, "It's unacceptable and abhorrent to attack Vice President Harris or anyone's racial identity. The American people deserve better."
A U.S. House Republican, quoted anonymously, told Axios that Trump's racial attack on Harris was "embarrassing." And another House Republican complained, "That was not a demonstration on how to win over undecided voters."
Sen. Steve Daines (R-Montana) told Axios, "I think the better approach is to focus on their policies of Kamala Harris.... That's what I've been talking about."
