Virginia voters decided on Tuesday to allow Democrats to redraw the state’s House map to give the party a bonus. This is a game win for the Democrats in one of the nation’s final redistricting battles before the November midterm elections.
But MAGA personalities on social media wailed at the news, with Free Beacon editor and former Fox News Senior Editor Peter J. Hasson furious at the outcome.
“It really is so egregious that Virginia’s wealthiest residents are straight up trying to steal voting power from the state’s rural and working-class voters,” posted Hasson Tuesday night on X, minutes after major networks called the ballot initiative a Democrat victory.
Chief Content Officer Right Line News Florida’ Voice News Eric Daugherty was equally dismayed.
“BREAKING: Virginia voters have PASSED the egregiously Congressional gerrymandering map, expected to give 10 SEATS to Democrats — only 1 seat to Republicans,” said Daugherty on X. … That means over 90 percent of Virginia becomes represented by DEMOCRATS, disenfranchising a HUGE swath of the entire state.”
“The courts MUST strike this down!” demanded Daugherty,” adding “FLORIDA must jump in [with its own gerrymandering scheme]! Their special session is coming up.”
Other MAGA voices, like frequent Fox News pundit and Newsmax writer Nick Sorter, were elated earlier in the evening as smaller, rural, Republican areas counted their votes first delivering steady “No” votes.
“JUST IN: Democrats are STUNNED as voter turnout in rural Virginia counties is OUTPERFORMING turnout for the 2024 Presidential election[.] With 43 percent of the vote in, NO on Democrat redistricting is ahead by TEN POINTS,” Sorter said — but he collapsed into anger later as more populated bluer Virginia areas slowly tallied their counts.
“Democrats can NEVER win without DUPING voters, and this PROVES it,” Sorter said.
Former Illinois Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger was quick to point out MAGA’s double standards Tuesday night.
“Texas redistricts without a vote, Republicans cheer. Dems in Virginia respond by putting it UP FOR A VOTE OF THE PEOPLE, it passes, Republican cry foul,” Kinzinger posted on X.
Virginia's redistricting initiative represents a significant shift in how states approach legislative mapmaking. Unlike the Republican-controlled redistricting processes in states such as Texas, Florida, and North Carolina — where lawmakers redrew maps behind closed doors to entrench GOP advantages — Virginia's ballot measure brought the process directly to voters.
The state's previous congressional map, drawn by Republicans after the 2020 census, had locked in a 7-4 Republican advantage despite Virginia's increasingly Democratic lean. Tuesday's vote gives Democrats the opportunity to redraw those lines, potentially flipping several seats.
