'Made a mistake': George Conway points out 'irony' in Trump's attack on Federalist Society

George Conway, a conservative attorney long affiliated with the Federalist Society, said Friday that President Donald Trump does not like the organization and became "very resentful" toward it — especially toward Leonard Leo — because the judges they recommended did not support his "attempted coup" in 2021.

"And the great irony of that today is that a lot of right wing hacks joined the Federalist Society in these past several years thinking this is the way to get a job. And they made a mistake there," Conway said during an appearance on MSNBC Friday.

On Thursday, Trump reacted to the U.S. Court of International Trade ruling against his tariffs in a 506-word social media rant, saying that the judges who issued the ruling have done "damage" to the United States. Trump said Leonard Leo, a conservative legal activist who serves on the board of the Federalist Society, "controls" the judges of the Supreme Court and is a "sleazebag" and a "bad person."

"The U.S. Court of International Trade incredibly incredibly ruled against the United States of America on desperately needed Tariffs but, fortunately, the full 11 Judge Panel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit Court has just stayed the order by the Manhattan-based Court of International Trade," Trump wrote in a lengthy Truth Social post Thursday night.

"Where do these initial three Judges come from? How is it possible for them to have potentially done such damage to the United States of America? Is it purely a hatred of 'TRUMP?'" the president wrote.

In his Friday remarks on MSNBC, Conway said, "Trump doesn't like the Federalist Society because it's a diverse group," he said, adding that it includes conservatives, libertarians, and others.

According to Conway, one reason for the relatively slow pace of judicial appointments under Trump’s second term, compared to the surge seen eight years ago under Leo and Don McGahn, is that many individuals within the conservative legal establishment are not being considered qualified by Trump simply because they haven’t demonstrated personal loyalty to him.

Conway said Trump doesn't "care about" the conservative ideology either.

"Most of the conservatives are actually conservative, and sometimes they have compromised themselves for Trump. But at the end of the day, what Donald Trump cares about is not conservative ideology," he said.

"It's not conservative legal principles. It's not interpreting the constitution, which he says he doesn't even have to enforce or doesn't think he has to enforce. It's about himself. He only cares about himself, and that's all it's about," Conway added.
