How MAGA Republicans are 'stepping up their appeals to donors' to help Trump's Georgia co-defendants

Special counsel Jack Smith and Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis are both prosecuting criminal cases based on former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, but there are some key differences between the two indictments.

Legal experts have described Smith's case as lean and mean, while Willis' more broad and expansive prosecution also includes indictments of 18 Trump allies. Moreover, Willis is including RICO laws in her prosecution, unlike Smith.

Far-right MAGA Republicans have been railing against Willis relentlessly. And according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Greg Bluestein, some of them in Georgia are establishing the Fulton Defense Fund to help three of Trump's co-defendants.

Bluestein reports, "Donald Trump's top Georgia supporters are hosting fundraising events and stepping up their appeals to donors to help pay the costly legal fees for three GOP electors charged with signing a sham certificate falsely claiming that the Republican won the 2020 election. The Georgia GOP has sent out urgent requests for cash to help cover the costs for the trio, who have each pleaded not guilty to a Fulton County indictment brought by District Attorney Fani Willis alleging they were involved in a far-ranging 'criminal enterprise.'"

The three Republican co-defendants the Fulton Defense Fund is raising money for are Georgia State Sen. Shawn Still, former Georgia GOP Chairman David Shafer, and Cathy Latham (former chair of the Coffee County, Georgia GOP).

MAGA Republicans who are involved in the Fulton Defense Fund, according to Bluestein, include Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and State Sen. Colton Moore (who has been calling for Willis' impeachment but hasn't gotten any support from Gov. Brian Kemp — a conservative Republican who has pushed back against Trump's false claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him).
