'More con artistry': Experts mock Trump’s claim America will 'cease to exist' if he's not re-elected
02 April 2024
During a Tuesday, April 2 appearance in Michigan, former President Donald Trump claimed that if he does not beat President Joe Biden in November, the country, as we know it, will no longer exist.
According to MLive.com, Trump offered "remarks before a packed but invite-only audience of about 120 people at the DeVos Place Convention Center," and though "Trump’s campaign was unable to say who was invited," several "local, state and federal politicians, including Michigan GOP Chair Pete Hoekstra, former U.S. Rep. Mike Bishop," and U.S. Rep. John James were in attendance."
During his speech, the former president said, "If we don’t win on November 5th, I think our country is going to cease to exist. It could be the last election we ever have. I actually mean that. If we don’t win, I think this could be the last election we ever have."
The four-times indicted former president still faces more than 80 felony counts and several civil and criminal trials.

Several lawmakers, politics experts and journalists mocked the MAGA hopeful's sentiments.
US Rep. Jared Moskowitz (R-FL) replied, We will still have elections. We will still have sunshine. We will still have rain. We will still have flowers. We will still have dogs and cats. We will still have Doritos. We will still have…etc
New York University law professor and MSNBC analyst Ruth Ben-Ghiat wrote, "Remember: Trump is trying to keep people in a state of existential dread so they can be emotionally manipulated and do whatever he asks, à la Jan 6. Right out of the autocratic playbook."
Mother Jones DC Bureau Chief and MSNBC analyst David Corn commented, "More con artistry. He lost in 2020 and the country did not "cease to exist." He's turning his cult into a doomsday cult. Moreover, here we see law enforcement officers helping a guy who has vowed to pardon cop-beaters."

Vox senior politics correspondent Andrew Prokop added, Predicting the future is difficult. But I feel confident that, if Biden is reelected, the US will have elections in subsequent years. Feel free to screenshot and dunk on me if I am wrong.
The Daily Beast columnist Wajahat Ali said, "You've got a great democracy there...be shame if anything happened to it."
