Foreign leaders who have been critical of President Donald Trump are now piling in, according to The Daily Beast, ready to celebrate his humiliating defeat in the midterm elections.
In the wake of Tuesday night's historic blue wave, in which Democrats retook the House and Senate, and posted sweeping gains across the country, Trump has been attempting to distance himself from the situation, blaming the rest of the GOP for their losses and stressing that he was not actually on the ballot. Few seem to be buying this argument, as Trump's rampant unpopularity was the key driver for Democrats' success, and given how much their newfound power will hobble his agenda going forward.
One group that is certainly treating Trump's defeat as a humiliation is the global leaders who have opposed him since his return to the White House, with The Daily Beast compiling several reactions in a new piece published Wednesday morning.
"Abroad, some of Trump’s critics reveled in the 80-year-old president’s humiliation," the report explained. "Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez roasted the president and his party’s collapse."
"Yesterday, American society voted against policies that only make people poorer. Against hate. Against sexism. Against climate denial and against elite privilege," Sánchez posted from his official X account. "It happened in Brazil. It just happened in the US. And it will happen soon in Spain. The far-right wave that Feijóo and Abascal are trying to ride is no longer growing: it’s crumbling."
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre spoke to Reuters about the results, calling them a "powerful" rebuke from voters.
"This is a powerful political signal about a change of course among American voters," Støre said. "Voices are now emerging in American politics that are closer to us than the president and the administration have stood for, for example on climate and environment, and in foreign policy and development aid policy."
Norbert Röttgen, a senior lawmaker from Germany's Christian Democratic Union, suggested that the results could help rein in Trump's approach to Russia and Ukraine.
"Siding with Moscow or massively escalating the war against Iran militarily would face clear and substantial opposition in Congress,” Röttgen said. “Nothing about Trump can be predicted, but new opportunities are opening up for German and European foreign policy both to pursue our security interests by supporting Ukraine and to sustain a functioning transatlantic relationship.”
Ines Schwerdtner, joint leader of the country's Left Party, added: "This is a crashing defeat for the global Right.”
"Voters have spoken: Trump only cares about Trump," Bernd Lange, head of the European Parliament’s international trade committee, said in a statement. "Now he’s paying the price for it. No amount of shouting ‘fake news’ can change these facts."
