George Conway: Supporters of 'depraved pathological liar' Trump had 'no excuse' this time
07 November 2024
Attorney George Conway, like many other Never Trump conservatives, was an aggressive supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris' 2024 presidential campaign. Unlike Donald Trump, Conway emphasized, Harris valued the rule of law.
But Trump enjoyed a decisive victory over Harris on Election Day, winning Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona and other swing states and picking up at least 295 electoral votes. Moreover, Trump appeared to be winning the popular vote as well, unlike 2016 and 2020.
Conway speaks candidly about President-Elect Trump's victory in an article published by The Atlantic on November 6.

Voters, Conway laments, have chosen to return Trump to the White House despite all of his authoritarian threats — and are likely to suffer the consequences.
"By 2020, after the chaos, the derangement, and the incompetence, we knew a lot better," Conway recalls. "And most other Americans did too, voting him out of office that fall. And when his criminal attempt to steal the election culminated in the violence of January 6, their judgment was vindicated. So, there was no excuse this year."
Conway continues, "We knew all we needed to know, even without the mendacious raging about Ohioans eating pets, the fantasizing about shooting journalists and arresting political opponents as 'enemies of the people,' even apart from the evidence presented in courts and the convictions in one that demonstrated his abject criminality."
The millions of Americans who voted for Trump in 2024, Conway laments, knew exactly what they were signing up for.

"We knew, and have known, for years," Conway warns. "Every American knew, or should have known. The man elected president last night is a depraved and brazen pathological liar, a shameless con man, a sociopathic criminal, a man who has no moral or social conscience, empathy, or remorse. He has no respect for the Constitution and laws he will swear to uphold, and on top of all that, he exhibits emotional and cognitive deficiencies that seem to be intensifying, and that will only make his turpitude worse…. I say all of this not in anger, but in deep and profound sorrow…. The system was never perfect, but it inched toward its own betterment, albeit in fits and starts."
Conway continues, "But in the end, the system the Framers set up — and indeed, all constitutional regimes, however well designed — cannot protect a free people from themselves."
