Revealed: 'Trump loyalists' in Congress are already preparing for his second presidency
25 March 2024
During a Thursday, March 21 appearance on MSNBC, veteran conservative consultant/strategist Stuart Stevens predicted that the 2024 presidential race will be "1980 in reverse" — meaning that Democratic incumbent President Joe Biden will pull way ahead of GOP nominee Donald Trump in the months before the election, not unlike Ronald Reagan in 1980. Stuart's argument is that the more 2024 voters look at Trump, the more they will turn against him.
But polls release in March are showing a real dogfight of a race. Trump narrowly leads Biden in many polls, yet some polls show Biden with small single-digit leads.
In a report published on March 25, the Daily Beast's Reese Gorman stresses that Republicans in Congress are assuming that Trump will win and are making plans accordingly.

"Without the active support of Republican lawmakers," Gorman explains, "Trump's power to reshape the country will be far more limited — just as it was during his first term, when his efforts to undo the Affordable Care Act were stalled and, in general, his worst impulses were reined in by a skeptical congressional GOP. Now, many of the Republicans who thwarted Trump's most aggressive priorities are gone, replaced by Trump loyalists. And in surveying Republican lawmakers, aides, and Trumpworld sources to piece together Capitol Hill's role in a Trump second term, one thing became clear last week: instead of containing Trump, a Republican Congress would march in lockstep behind him in MAGA harmony."
Loyalists who would be likely to aggressively promote Trump's agenda in a second term, according to Gorman, range from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) to Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio).
A Republican senior aide, interviewed on condition of anonymity, told the Beast, "A key priority will be reining in the federal bureaucracy that has operated with impunity for far too long. A Republican House and Senate will be crucial to accomplishing that goal."
