President Donald Trump greets Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Ann Guilfoyle at a celebration in honor of Greek Independence Day at the White House in Washington, D.C., March 26, 2026.
President Donald Trump disclaimed any meaningful connection to Kimberly Guilfoyle, the former US ambassador to Greece who resigned in disgrace on Tuesday for allegedly misusing her office for personal profit. Trump has given Guilfoyle the cold shoulder, including describing Guilfoyle's past engagement to his eldest son as "she, I guess, dated my son a long time ago, but she wasn’t.”
According to one journalist, Trump has a long history of downplaying his personal relationships with controversial individuals with whom he was once close.
"A few years ago, for example, after attorney Sidney Powell pleaded guilty to election-related crimes in Georgia, Trump wrote on his social media platform, 'Despite the Fake News reports to the contrary, and without even reaching out to ask the Trump Campaign, MS. POWELL WAS NOT MY ATTORNEY, AND NEVER WAS,'" wrote MS NOW's Steve Benen on Tuesday. "(Reality told a different story: Powell was a member of his legal team in 2020, and he bragged about it at the time.)"
"Similarly, after Steve Bannon was indicted by a federal grand jury, Trump acted as if he barely knew him, saying his former White House strategist had merely worked 'for a small part of the administration,'" Benen added. He then proceeded to list other occasions when Trump has misled the public about his relationships with controversial members of his administration, including then-U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland in 2019, former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn controversial businessmen Igor Fruman or Lev Parnas after their arrests, his former personal attorney Michael Cohen after he was indicted, and his former 2016 campaign chairman Paul Manafort. The last example was described as nothing more than a random staffer “who played a very limited role for a very limited amount of time.”
Benen added, "Former campaign adviser Carter Page was described as someone Trump 'does not know.' George Papadopoulos, another former campaign adviser, was dismissed as a 'coffee boy.' Trump world even tried to downplay its association with Cambridge Analytica, the Trump campaign’s data firm."
Guilfoyle has joined this list of figures with whom Trump is distancing himself because of a scandal involving alleged abuse of office. She was appointed Trump's ambassador to Greece after she split with his son Donald Trump Jr. during their engagement, and is accused of spending much of her time there spending taxpayer money to surround herself in luxuries and receive financial gifts from powerful business leaders.
A man who accused Guilfoyle of trying to manipulate him into bribing her has vowed to "depose her" himself if necessary. That individual is Eric Deters, a former Republican congressional candidate from Kentucky, who claims Guilfoyle begged him to pay off her $100,000 American Express credit card bill in an alleged pay-for-influence scandal.
