'That was outrageous': Hush money judge rips Trump defense attorney during closing argument

Early Tuesday afternoon, May 28 in Justice Juan Merchan's Lower Manhattan courtroom, defense attorney Todd Blanche gave his closing argument in Donald Trump's hush money/falsified business records trial.

During the argument, Blanche suggested to the jury that Trump could face jail time if he is found guilty — a suggestion that Merchan, according to the Washington Post, attacked as "highly inappropriate."

Merchan told Blanche, a former prosecutor, "That was outrageous, Mr. Blanche. Someone who's been a prosecutor as long as you have, someone who's been an attorney as long as you have, knows that is highly inappropriate."

The Washington Post reported, "The judge said he would give a curative instruction to the jury after the break."

On MSNBC, legal analyst Andrew Weissmann weighed in on Merchan chastising Blanche.

Weissmann described Merchan's reaction as appropriate, arguing that the judge has been fair to Trump's defense throughout the trial.

During his closing argument, Blanche vigorously attacked testimony by one of the prosecution's star witnesses: Michael Cohen, Trump's former personal attorney and fixer.
