NY Times editorial board lists 91 people who 'served' Trump speaking out against a second term
26 September 2024
During his four years in the White House, Donald Trump angrily turned against many people who served in his administration — from former National Security Adviser John Bolton to former Attorney General Jeff Sessions to former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Bolton has been saying that Trump is unfit for office, warning that he has dangerously flawed views on foreign policy, suffers from a painfully short attention span, and fails to see the value of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
In an editorial published on September 26, the New York Times' editorial board quotes 91 people offering their insights on Trump —many of them people who worked closely with him. Some of them are voting for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, while others — including former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr — are reluctantly voting for Trump.
Bolton, however, has said he will vote for neither Trump nor Harris and will be writing in former Vice President Dick Cheney's name. Cheney himself, however, has endorsed Harris.

"The New York Times editorial board has made its case that Mr. Trump is unfit to lead," the board writes. "But the strongest case against him may come from his own people. For those Americans who are still tempted to return him to the presidency or to not vote in November, it is worth considering the assessment of Mr. Trump by those who have seen him up close."
Barr, the Times notes, warned that Trump "will always put his own interests and gratifying his own ego ahead of everything else, including the country’s interest" — and former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos recalled that Trump's "behavior had grown increasingly erratic and unnerving." Similarly, Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, is quoted as saying that Trump's "temperament wasn't rational."
Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper described Trump as a "threat to democracy." And former Vice President Mike Pence, who isn't voting for Trump but hasn't endorsed Harris, has said of Trump, "Anyone that puts themselves over the Constitution should never be president."
The editorial quotes many other people who know Trump well, from Tillerson to former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). And some of the quotes are from members of the Trump family, including psychologist/author Mary Trump (the former president's niece) and the late federal judge/attorney Maryanne Trump Barry (his sister)
