Trump Asks About His Golf Course During Visit to Hurricane-Ravaged North Carolina

President Donald Trump loves being the center of attention. Even during a major catastrophe, The Donald has a way of making things about himself—for example, indirectly inquiring about his North Carolina golf course while the state continues to suffer the devastating effects of Hurricane Florence.

When Trump visited the Carolinas on Wednesday, September 19, Hurricane Florence had taken a heavy toll. Flood waters were continuing to rise, the death toll was continuing to increase. And during a briefing that included Duke Energy CEO Lynn Good, the president specifically inquired about the Lake Norman area—which is where one of his golf courses is located.

Trump asked, “And how is Lake Norman, that area? How is it doing?” When Good told the president that it was doing well despite “ten or 12 inches of rain,” he responded, “I love that area. I can’t tell you why, but I love that area.”

The shores of Lake Norman, in fact, is home to a Trump National Golf Club.

When Trump was criticized on Twitter for inquiring about Lake Norman specifically, some of his supporters rushed to his defense. One of them, posting as The Real Fake Yapper, denounced the criticism as “fake news pandering to liberals who by nature, believe what’s put in front of them.”

Hurricane Florence is the most severe storm to hit the Carolinas in decades. As of Wednesday afternoon, September 19, the death toll had reached 37 (27 of those deaths in North Carolina). And thousands of people were staying in shelters.
