During her 2024 presidential campaign, then-Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) made a concerted effort to reach out to independent voters. Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) aggressively campaigned for Harris, and the 2024 Democratic National Convention featured well-known Republicans like former Trump White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham, ex-Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois) and ex-Mike Pence staffer Olivia Troye.
Regardless, now-President Donald Trump fared much better among independents than Democrats were hoping, narrowly defeating Harris by roughly 1.5 percent in the popular vote.
But according to CNN's Harry Enten, Trump's support among independents is plummeting fast.

When CNN host Kate Bolduan noted that "new polling shows independents are turning somewhat sour on President Trump's economic leadership right now with the rollout of his tariff agenda," Enten dug into polling data.
Enten told Bolduan, "Independents feel that Donald Trump has vacated the center of the electorate, catering to his base. What are we talking about? Well, let's talk about the overall net approval ratings. We're going to look at the worst ever at this point in a presidency. The old record among independents for the worst ever was Donald Trump back in 2016: a net approval rating of -16 points. Well, Donald trump has broken his own record here: He now holds, in this particular term, the worst ever net approval rating at this point in a presidency among independents."
Enten continued, "And get this: -22 points. He is 22 points underwater with independents. That breaks the old record that belonged to Trump. He has set the new record. He is completely underwater with the center of the electorate."
Enten stressed that "what independents are hearing from Donald Trump, they hate," adding, "And they are abandoning him in record numbers."

Enten noted that during his first presidency in April 2017, Trump was "at zero points" in terms of "net approval rating on the economy" — whereas now, in April 2025, he is "at -29 points."
Enten told Bolduan, "You go back through the record books…. I can't find anything close to this. This is such a record that there is no historical analogy to be 29 points underwater on the most important issue of the day with independents."
