Top Trump advisers 'struggling' to develop 'best way to attack' Harris: report
28 July 2024
Following Donald Trump's rally appearance in St. Cloud, Minnesota Saturday night, CNN's Alayna Treene reported that the former president's efforts to "workshop" his attacks against Vice President Kamala Harris are failing, according to top Trump campaign officials
Claiming Harris "is more radical" than President Joe Biden, Treene reported, Trump "tried to focus his attacks on her policy positions when it comes to immigration, crime, inflation — all areas where the Trump campaign believes Republicans poll better than Democrats."
The CNN reporter noted, "One thing I found very interesting was that Donald Trump said many people had argued to him that they thought he would perhaps be nicer after the assassination attempt on his life. And he later joked that he actually thinks he could be worse."

The news network then played two separate moments from the rally — one in which the ex-president claimed Harris makes Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) "look like a moderate" — and another in which Trump "was about to attack and mock Joe Biden, and then stopped himself abruptly, arguing it would be a waste of time."
Treene emphasized that moment was "striking because it really does exemplify what I've been hearing from senior Trump advisers my conversations with them, which is that they are struggling, and still trying to figure out the best way to attack" Harris.
"Remember, Donald Trump in his campaign have spent this entire election thus far workshopping being a playbook designed to go after an unpopular 81-year-old man. Now, they have to change gears, and it was clear that Donald Trump is still struggling to adapt to that. We know that he often goes on to long rants and mocks Joe Biden onstage, and he did end up doing that on Saturday night, but it was very clear that he wanted to really turn his focus and his attention to going after Harris."
