Trump pleads the Fifth in NY AG deposition — despite once claiming it made Clinton 'look guilty as hell!'

The office of New York State Attorney General Letitia James has been conducting a civil investigation of the Trump Organization’s finances, and former President Trump was expected to submit to a deposition on Wednesday, August 10. But according to NBC News’ Vaughn Hillyard, Trump has decided to take the Fifth Amendment.

NBC News’ Vaughn Hillyard tweeted an official statement from Trump, who angrily railed against James while explaining his reasons for taking the Fifth.

“Attorney General Letitia James openly campaigned on the policy of ‘Get and Destroy Trump,’” the former president wrote. “This political attack on me, my family and my great company is her despicable attempt to fulfill that cynical, and very corrupt promise. James developed a political platform and made a career out of maliciously attacking me and my business before she was even elected.”

On August 10 at 10:16 AM eastern time, Politico’s Kyle Cheney tweeted, “JUST IN: Trump says he has pleaded the Fifth in his deposition with the New York State AG. ‘Under the advice of my counsel ... I declined to answer the questions under the rights and privileges afforded to every citizen under the United States Constitution.’”

The Washington Post’s Aaron Blake, in response to Cheney’s tweet, posted, “Trump in 2017: ‘If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?’ Trump in 2014: ‘If you are innocent, do not remain silent. You look guilty as hell!’”

Logan Murphy of the Crooks and Liars website also responded to Cheney’s tweet, posting video of one of Trump’s 2016 debates with Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. In the video, Trump is seen saying it is “disgraceful” to “take the Fifth.”
