'Season for the dark arts': Trump campaign email hack is troubling sign for 2024 election

Political strategists and organizers have not only been expressing their fears about the possibility of unrest or violence during the 2024 presidential election — they are also worried about interference from a foreign power.

Talking Points Memo's David Kurtz addresses that concern in an article published on August 12.

"We've entered the mean season for the dark arts: foreign influence, computer hacks, and disinformation," Kurtz reports. "The question is whether we're any better prepared to withstand them than we were in 2016. The outlook isn't promising."

Kurtz goes on to describe some things that recall "the Russian influence scheme of 2016 but with the focus this time on Iran."

The TPM reporter notes that on July 9, U.S. intel officials described Russia as the "preeminent threat" to U.S. election security this year but also described Iran as a "chaos agent."

On August 10, Politico's Alex Isenstadt reported on hacked political materials that included a 271-page research dossier used in the vetting of Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), now Trump's running mate.

The Washington Post reported, on August 11, that it had also received a copy of that dossier.

"It's only August," Kurtz comments. "There's a long way until November."
