'Today’s Republicans are fascist': Conservative activist slams authoritarian GOP candidates

Progressive MSNBC host Tiffany Cross hasn’t been shy about expressing her total disdain former President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement, and the modern Republican Party was attacked from both the left and the right when one of her conservative guests joined one of her Democratic guests in describing today’s Republicans as “fascists.”

During a Saturday, August 6 segment, Cross hosted a panel that included Lucy Caldwell — a former Republican activist who is now very much in the Never Trump camp — and Democratic strategist Fernand Amandi. The panel discussed everything from the 2022 midterms to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, focusing heavily on how far to the right the Republican Party has moved. Caldwell pulled no punches, arguing that the GOP has abandoned traditional conservatism and is now embracing outright fascism.

“Today’s Republicans are fascist, and it’s not just on issues like our democracy and the election being stolen or not stolen,” Caldwell told Cross and Amandi. “It’s on issues like a woman’s right to medical care.”

Democrats, Caldwell stressed, shouldn’t try to win over conservative voters on specific issues but rather, need to show them how dangerously authoritarian the Republican Party has become.

Caldwell, now with Renew Democracy, told the panel, “We want to activate voters around…. the fear of fascism of Republicans, not necessarily asking them to become Planned Parenthood boosters because they’re not going to. That’s a cultural bridge too far for many folks.”

Amandi wholeheartedly agreed with Caldwell that the GOP has been taken over by “fascists,” although he applauded Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois as two GOP conservatives who are resisting authoritarianism in their party.

Amandi told the panel, “As long as people like Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger are still in the Republican Party, I’m holding out hope…. When those folks are fully gone, I think we can absolutely call all of them fascists. But I think this is the battle for the soul of what’s left of the Trump Republican Party. Right now, we see, unabashed, Tiffany, these fascist candidates representing the Trump wing — willing to do whatever it takes to dismantle democracy…. You have to make the case to the American people, this project, this authoritarian America First project, which is a fascist project, is designed not only to dismantle our rights. The next step is to literally dismantle the Constitution.”

Amandi continued, “There are calls for a constitutional convention to undo the Constitution if they capture all three branches of government again. You’ve seen folks like Rick Santorum and others lead that charge. That is what’s coming next.”
