Former GOP strategist demands more 'anti-Trump Republican support for Kamala'
26 August 2024
At the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, not all of the speakers who slammed GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump were Democrats. Trump was also attacked from the right during the event by former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois), former Trump White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham, former Mike Pence national security aide Olivia Troye, and Mesa, Arizona Mayor John Giles — all of whom laid out their reasons for endorsing Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.
In an article published by the conservative website The Bulwark on August 26, former GOP strategist Tim Miller applauds Duncan for putting country over party but argues that a lot more anti-Trump Republicans need to step up to the plate.
"The moment from the Democratic convention I kept coming back to this weekend wasn't from Oprah or the Obamas, Steph or Steve, Kamala or Doug — not even Gus Walz, America's proudest son," Miller explains. "It came early in the program on Wednesday night, from a former lieutenant governor, a modest slot for a mid-level political figure. He was there in his role as a conservative Republican willing to offer a full-throated endorsement of Kamala Harris, putting patriotism over partisanship or policy particulars."

Miller adds, "In that speech, Geoff Duncan recalled how his family needed armed officers outside their home to protect them from MAGA radicals who were upset he would not be a party to Trump’s attempted coup."
But Miller goes on to cite other anti-Trump Republicans he says should be speaking out more, accusing them of "personal and political cowardice." And he specifically mentions Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Romney, and former White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly.
"Once the strategic, logistical, and ideological concerns are resolved," Miller argues, "there’s only one thing left to explain the lack of anti-Trump Republican support for Kamala: These people are chickens---…. So what's the holdup?"
Miller continues, "I have been told that one answer to this is concerns about personal safety. And I hear that. But lots of people have put their personal safety at risk. I've gotten threats. So have Kinzinger and Duncan and my colleague Sarah Longwell. We all have young kids, and none of us has either Secret Service or the scratch for private security. Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman had to move out of their damn home. That didn't stop them."
