Internal polling reveals warning signs for Ted Cruz and Senate GOP: memo

Internal poling from the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), a Republican super PAC founded by allies of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, is flashing warning signs for Senate Republicans, Politico reports.

According to an “internal polling memo obtained by POLITICO,” October polling “shows all but one Republican candidate running behind Donald Trump in battleground states.”

According to Politico, “Republicans are still favored to take control” of the Senate, but efforts to secure open seats in Maryland, Michigan and Arizona are proving tough for Republicans. Meanwhile, Politico reports, “Texas and Nebraska, may be emerging as late-breaking problem spots.”

“The memo warns of two defensive problems: In Texas, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz is only up 1 point in the latest poll,” Politico reports.

“‘Beginning in early August, Colin Allred has been heavily outspending Ted Cruz,’ the memo reads,” according to the report.

Democrats tried in 2018 to defeat Cruz, with challenger Beto O’Rourke raising $80 million in his unsuccessful bid to unseat the junior senator. Politico reports SLF’s numbers “reflect” Democratic efforts to oust Cruz this election cycle — in large part thanks to the senator’s looming “unpopularity.”

“Cruz’s favorability is above water by just 1 point at 49/48 while Allred’s is up 12 points at 48/36. Meanwhile, Allred is running 2 points ahead of [Vice President Kamala] Harris while Cruz is running 2 points behind Trump."
