Why Taylor Swift’s 'second-wave feminism' is a badly needed 'antidote' to Trumpism: journalist

On October 26, Bloomberg News reported that Taylor Swift had achieved billionaire status. The pop superstar had been a millionaire for a long time, but her Eras Tour has generated so much money that she is now officially a billionaire.

Journalist Jill Lawrence, in an article published by the conservative website The Bulwark on October 27, praises Swift as a badly needed "antidote" to Trumpism who combines "kindness" with an "iron will."

"Swift is the antidote we need, especially now," Lawrence argues. "She shows young girls, women, and her many male fans that you can be a rich celebrity while also treating others with kindness and respect. You can give away extra money to people who work for you, instead of stiffing them for what they're owed."

The journalist continues, "You can be strong without threats and intimidation. You can show that kindness is not weakness. In the age of Donald Trump, these are all lessons that bear repeating."

Lawrence acknowledges that it took her "an embarrassingly long time to understand the Swift phenomenon" but recalls that her grew to respect her a symbol of "second-wave feminism" along the way. The journalist also salutes her get-out-the-vote efforts.

"Swift is an icon, a big sister, a mentor," Lawrence stresses. "She's also an emphatic win for second-wave feminism and its legacy of smashed stereotypes, economic empowerment, and anti-discrimination laws…. Beyond all that, as meaningful as it is to second-wavers like me, Swift is a sorely needed role model for our times."
