'Stupid, ridiculous self-righteous crap': Iowa grandma scorches Republicans’ six-week abortion ban

Iowa lawmakers convened on Tuesday to finalize a six-week abortion ban that Republicans are gunning to send to GOP Governor Kim Reynolds' desk later in the evening.

"The legislation, once passed, will prohibit abortions after cardiac activity is detected in an embryo, which doctors can say can happen as early as six weeks gestation," The Des Moines Register reported. That will mark a sharp deviation from Iowa's current law, which allows abortion up to 22 weeks after a woman's last menstrual period.

But residents are not sitting idly by while they watch their rights being whittled away.

"Hundreds of protesters flooded the Capitol rotunda, chanting for hours," the Registernoted. "Arguments broke out between supporters and opponents of the bill, becoming so heated at one point that a state trooper had to break them up."

One constituent who recently moved to the Hawkeye State, testified about the impact that Senate File 359 will have on Iowans' lives — and she spared no mercy for the hypocrisy that underlies the right-wing crusade against personal bodily autonomy and caring for the non-rich.

"Hi, my name is Felicia Hilton. I live in Des Moines," she began. "I'm here as a woman. I'm not representing anybody but myself, my daughter, my daughter-in-law, my four granddaughters, and we all relocated to this state, and I am mortified that we picked to move to Iowa right now. So for Kim Reynolds, Bob Vander Plaats — who I don't even know who that is! — he threatened judges in a newspaper and now all of a sudden you guys are gonna go and sign this at his celebration of some church celebration, I hear?"

Vander Plaats is the chief executive officer of The Family Leader, which is a Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group.

"Where was he when Kim Reynolds was saying she wasn't gonna feed kids anymore? These same kids that you've made harder to get eligible for SNAP when Infamil is $30 or more a can? Really? Really? Where were they then? Where are all these church people when she's denying people healthcare? Where are they then?" Hilton continued. "I'm just saying, if this is about the church, that this is about God, you are the same people that will slap them loaves of breads outta Jesus' hand. Slap out the fish outta Jesus' hand and tell them to get in line and figure out if they're worthy or eligible. Are they eligible for this food, Jesus? Are they eligible for healing, Jesus? Are these people good enough? Is that what you're telling me in the state of Iowa, that you get to choose who this is? Yeah, you! The people that think this is a great idea, who gets to choose this? Who does this? This is absolutely an offense to women. This is an offense to everybody, and it is offensive that you're gonna go celebrate the oppression of women at a church. You're gonna go celebrate the oppression of women at a church, but the church wasn't there when she's going to cut the food assistance from the federal government to people. Where were you then? The church is not there."

The session's leader tried to cut Hilton off, but she was not having it.

"Ma'am, it's been over three minutes," the man said.

"It doesn't matter. This is a lie. You guys are lying to yourselves and you're offending everyone, including God," Hilton fired back.

"I'm happy to let you have your say, but that was three minutes," he reiterated.

"Yeah, you're offending God. I do not care. This state is ridiculous. The stupid, stupid, ridiculous self-righteous crap. You're not better than anybody. You're not better than anybody. Cause you got money? That's who you serve. Money. That's who you serve. You don't serve God. You serve money," Hilton charged.

"Ma'am, we gotta bring new speakers in," Hilton was told.

"I don't care. I do not care," she declared while exiting the room. "I'm so offended by everybody in this room that supports this bill."
