Lawyers are ditching top Trump allies for not paying their bills: report
31 October 2023
"War Room" host Steve Bannon, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell are among the many Donald Trump allies who falsely claimed that the 2020 election was stolen from the former president. Since then, all three of them have had an abundance of legal problems — and, according to The Guardian's Peter Stone, are being dropped by their attorneys after failing to pay their "hefty" legal bills.
In addition to facing a variety of civil lawsuits, Giuliani is a co-defendant in Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis' election interference case. Bannon was charged with contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena from the January 6 Select Committee.
Lindell has been sued for defamation by Dominion Voting Systems and its competitor Smartmatic.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?
In a report published by The Guardian on October 31, Stone explains, "A trio of top Donald Trump allies who have racked up huge legal expenses to defend themselves from either criminal charges, convictions or defamation lawsuits have lost key lawyers for failing to pay six- and seven-figure bills in a sign of the huge legal problems they face…. Welcome to the escalating legal and financial headaches plaguing three of the former U.S. president's top loyalists who pushed various false claims about his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden that helped provide cover for Trump's election falsehoods."
Stone adds that the "list of legal woes" that Bannon, Giuliani and Lindell are facing "is long."
"In October," Stone reports, "the law firm (representing Lindell) formally asked a court to allow it to withdraw from representing Lindell…. citing millions of dollars it was owed. On another legal front, a top lawyer for Bannon and Giuliani has ditched them and filed big claims for monies owed. Robert Costello and his firm, which has represented both Giuliani and Bannon, have filed separate claims against the duo, respectively, for $1.4m and $480,000."
