'You don’t beat somebody by ignoring them': Ex-Dem senator suggests 'no purpose' for GOP hopefuls

Ahead of Wednesday's GOP debate, former United States Senator Claire McCaskill expressed her lack of confidence that the 2024 Republican presidential candidates will stand up to ex-President Donald Trump on the Miami stage.

MSNBC's Joy Reid noted aside from Trump — who remains the leading GOP candidate despite facing 91 criminal charges — "There are other people running. It's kind of hard to remember that because they don't seem relevant or important," Reid said. "But a bunch of people who say they're running for president. They're running for podcasts. They're running — [Florida Governor] Ron DeSantis, [ex-South Carolina Governor] Nikki Haley, [ex-New Jersey Governor] Chris Christie, [biotech entrepreneur] Vivek Ramaswamy and [U.S. Senator] Tim Scott (R-SC). What's the purpose of them at this point?"

McCaskill replied, "I don't know. I don't think they know. I mean, you know, you cannot beat somebody by ignoring them. And they have -- all of them, have ignored Trump this entire time. And if they don't say his name tonight, if Chris Christie is the only one that calls him out, they are so far behind him. And if they all would have in the beginning said, we are going to reject this guy who has been indicted 91 times in four jurisdictions and who is trying to undermine the basic tenant of our country in terms of our democracy, then we would be in a different place. But you don't beat somebody by ignoring them. and my prediction is they're going to have a smaller audience tonight and none of them are going to move significantly after the debate. And none of them will say the word Trump with maybe the exception of Chris Christie."
